[12 Mar 08] Condition of tyres critical: `worst storm of the winter`Category: General Motorists advised to pay attention to their tyres as 'worst storm of the winter' grips UK
With the latest bout of extreme weather forecast to last for much of the week ahead, which is battering the UK with heavy rain and gale force winds, TyreSafe, the UK's leading tyre safety organisation, is calling on motorists to take added care, and to spend time checking their tyres before driving. Many roads are experiencing high levels of standing water, with more heavy rainfall scheduled, therefore presenting added dangers to drivers.
Recent research has indicated that skidding in the wet is a motorist's major fear, which can result from reduced adhesion of the tyre following driving through deep water. The build-up of rainfall on the road can equally cause aquaplaning, the loss of steering capability and grip, as a result of a layer of water forming between the tyre and road surface.
The risks associated with wet weather driving can be reduced through maintaining tyres to the manufacturer recommended pressures and to the legal minimum tread depth. Worrying findings have revealed that almost 25% of all cars and vans on the roads in the UK have at least one defective or badly worn tyre, highlighting the importance of having tyres conforming to the minimum legal requirements. In addition, braking distances are significantly extended in the wet by up to four times compared to dry conditions.
TyreSafe is recommending motorists undertake a simple 5 minute tyre safety check to ensure that their tyres are safe before starting their journey.
1. Check, and adjust if necessary, the tyre pressure in each tyre including the spare as recommended in the manufacturer's handbook;
2. Clean dirt from around valves and fit dust caps to all tyres;
3. Remove stones and other foreign objects from the tread;
4. Check that tyres have at least 1.6mm of tread across three quarters of the width of the tyre. TyreSafe recommends that motorists consider changing tyres when the tread falls below 3mm;
5. Check for uneven tyre wear which might mean steering misalignment or out of balance wheels;
6. Check tyres for cuts and bulges which could render the tyre defective and potentially dangerous; and
7. TyreSafe recommends that if tyres need replacing they should be replaced in two's or all four.

[24 Jan 08] TyreSafe calls for action on faulty forecourt airlinesCategory: General TyreSafe, the tyre industry's leading tyre safety body, is calling on owners and managers of petrol retail forecourts to ensure that their tyre pressure airlines are kept in good working order following a damning report from the leading motoring weekly magazine Auto Express. The magazine found that up to 40% of these vital pieces of equipment were found to be faulty or in-operative.
Tyre pressures are vital to the safety and economic operation of all vehicles and tyre pressure airlines, that deliver greater or lesser pressures than required on the forecourt, could put motorist's safety at risk. Recent Department for Transport figures have confirmed that a third of all accidents involving injury was as a result of defective or under inflated tyres.
TyreSafe retail supporter Just Tyres are offering all motorists the opportunity of having their tyre pressures checked and adjusted where necessary. TyreSafe is urging motorists to take advantage of this free pressure check having regard for the particularly heavy rainfall in many areas at present, which will test how good a vehicle's tyres really are.

[11 Jan 08] One Third of Drivers Ignore Tread DepthCategory: General Over half of motorists fail to regularly check their tyre pressures. One third of drivers ignore tread depth
As the majority of commuters return to work this week after the Christmas break, the recent onset of wintry weather means that motorists are being welcomed back with difficult and challenging driving conditions, and the latest research has revealed that tyres are far from the highest priority in the new year's resolutions of drivers.
According to a recent survey, over half of motorists are failing to regularly check their tyre pressures before embarking on their journey, putting themselves and fellow drivers on the road at increased risk, as the latest cold spell hits the UK. This follows the worrying results from a study by automaker Kia which found that one in three drivers failed to check their tread depth each month during the winter season in 2007.
Severely deflated tyres pose a serious safety risk says TyreSafe, affecting the behaviour and handling of a vehicle as stopping distances in icy conditions are significantly increased by up to ten times the normal level, therefore raising the likelihood of an accident. It is equally important that tread depth is maintained above the minimum legal level of 1.6 mm to ensure the maximum level of grip on hazardous road surfaces.
Commenting on the findings, TyreSafe explains: "These results are of particular concern, as it clearly shows that motorists are simply not prepared for the colder weather. With snow and ice forecast to hit the country's roads in during the next few days, we strongly advise that motorists pay even greater attention to the condition of their tyres and find out their manufacturer recommended pressures if they are unsure."
TyreSafe recommends that motorists check their tyres before every journey, and more thoroughly on a monthly basis.

[4 Jan 08] DON`T GET LEFT OUT IN THE COLD!Category: General The incidence of car accidents on wet roads during winter months in the UK leaps by a staggering 267% according to DfT figures. TyreSafe, the UKs leading tyre safety organisation, is advising motorists of the importance of ensuring that the tyres on their vehicles are in top condition to stay safe this winter.
TyreSafe is also providing information on a new type of tyre now being made available to drivers in the UK - cold weather tyres. These tyres should not be confused with winter tyres - preferable for use in heavy snow and ice - but have been developed to give improved grip at 7oC or below. At this temperature the tread compound of standard 'summer' tyres - as fitted to the vast majority of cars sold in the UK - begins to harden and provides less grip.
The tread compound used in cold weather tyres contains more natural rubber and thus minimizes the hardening effect. As a consequence this new type of tyre gives extra grip in cold, wet and icy conditions. Drivers will experience significantly shorter stopping distances. Braking tests on icy roads at 20 mph have shown that a car fitted with cold weather tyres will come to a complete stop a full 11 metres sooner than a car fitted with 'summer' tyres. In a further test, braking from 62 mph on a wet road in temperatures below 7oC, the car with cold weather tyres will stop 5 metres before the car with standard tyres.
In addition to the safety aspects associated with cold weather tyres, there is also a financial incentive for the average driver. In winter months, the wear on 'summer' tyres increases, whereas with cold weather tyres, wear rates can be reduced by up to 20%. As well as this, cold weather tyres are just as quiet and provide just as comfortable a ride as standard tyres.
TyreSafe recommends that UK drivers visit their local fast fit dealer or independent tyre retailer to discuss the option of fitting cold weather tyres for winter months. Cold weather tyres have been developed by most large tyre manufacturers and whilst the market for this type of tyre in the UK is currently small, cold weather tyres are becoming increasingly popular across the rest of Europe.

[14 Aug 07] SUMMER DRIVING TYRE TIPSCategory: General Research has indicated that skidding in the wet is a motorist's major fear.
Almost a quarter of all cars and vans on the roads in the UK have at least one defective or badly worn tyre and according to TyreSafe - the UK's leading tyre safety organisation - in need of replacement. The current bout of unseasonably wet weather underlines the importance of having tyres with adequate tread depth.
Defective or badly worn tyres are a contributory factor in many vehicle accidents, particularly in the wet, and as the summer holiday period gets into its stride TyreSafe is advising motorists to check all their tyres before travelling to ensure a trouble free drive to their holiday destination.
In particular, when preparing for the holidays motorists should remember that their vehicles may be carrying a heavier than usual load often in warm conditions and travelling much longer distances than usual.
TyreSafe is recommending motorists undertake a simple 5 minute tyre safety check to ensure that their tyres are safe before starting their journey.
Check and adjust if necessary, the tyre pressure in each tyre including the spare as recommended in the manufacturer's handbook
Clean dirt from around valves and fit dust caps to all tyres
Remove stones and other foreign objects from the tread
Check that tyres have at least 1.6mm of tread across three quarters of the width of the tyre. TyreSafe recommends that motorists consider changing tyres when the tread falls below 3mm
Check for un-even tyre wear which might mean steering misalignment or out-of-balance wheels
Check tyres for cuts and bulges which could render the tyre defective and potentially dangerous
TyreSafe recommends that if tyres need replacing they should be replaced in two's or all four
Motorists uncomfortable checking their own tyres can take advantage of a free tyre check offered by most reputable tyre retailers who will also provide tyre safety advice and information.

[20 Apr 07] Motorists Get Their Tyres Back to Front!Category: General Most drivers think that new tyres should be fitted to the front wheels
A car tyre is often a distress purchase, but even when replacing one in the course of normal vehicle maintenance, it has long been believed that the new tyres should be fitted on the front wheels. Research by TyreSafe, Britain's foremost tyre safety organisation, has indicated that over 50% of motorists believe this to be the case and 30% of motorists did not know.
However, recent demonstrations have indicated that it is more beneficial to fit the new rubber to the rear wheels, regardless of whether the vehicle is front or rear wheel drive. Industry research suggests that if the new tyres are fitted to the rear wheels, water on the road surface is better dispersed, which improves straight line braking ability. Conversely, if the rear track is fitted with part worn tyres, the car often has a dangerous tendency to oversteer.
Although the majority of the cars on the road are front wheel drive, it seems to make sense to have the new tyres up front. The demonstrations also showed that there is often a greater loss of control when a rear tyre suffers a puncture, so in fact it makes greater sense to fit the fresh, less vulnerable rubber to the rear wheels.
Rear tyres are subject to relatively low wear rates as well, meaning that the new tyres will have a longer lifespan on the back rims. Fitting new tyres to the rear and moving part worn rubber to the front each time also means that the rear tyres will be less prone to age-related deterioration from prolonged exposure.

[13 Mar 07] Goverment Urges Motorists to Check Tyre PressuresCategory: General The UK goverment has introduced a campaign encouraging motorists to reduce CO2 emissions through adhering to a number ofsimple principles, including regularly checking tyre pressure.
The 'Drive Smart' campaign, promoted by the Department for Transport, began on 11th March and states that CO2 emissions could be reduced by 8 per cent if all drivers in the UK followed the campaign's smarter driving tips, this equals 5.5 million tonnes of CO2 a year, or more than £2 billion in fual costs. |
[19 Feb 07] Supercar drivers risking an accident says TyreSafeCategory: General Over 30% of high performance tyres removed at a specialist tyre outlet proved to be potentially dangerous
Drivers of Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and other high performance cars are risking an accident and injury on wet roads because of worn tyres, according to research released by TyreSafe, Britain's foremost tyre safety organisation.
One of the UK's largest suppliers of high performance tyres and a major TyreSafe supporter has, over a two month period, checked on the condition of tyres removed from high performance cars at their depot in the south of England. The results give cause for concern says TyreSafe. A dramatic 30% of the tyres removed were either defective or badly worn, almost three times the national average*. In addition to risking a £2,500 fine and 3-penalty points on the driver's licence, worn tyres increase the risk of an accident on wet roads. Independent research undertaken by the tyre industry at the Motor Industry Research Association showed that the ability of tyres to grip in the wet fall dramatically with a tread depth below 3mm.
Many of these cars, say TyreSafe, are not used regularly, and so tyres are not being checked on a weekly basis. Furthermore, high performance tyres tend to be more hidden under the wheel arch than those which are of more conventional size and therefore, visual checks of the tread are consequently more difficult to undertake.
TyreSafe is urging drivers of high performance cars to take advantage of free tyre checks offered by all reputable tyre dealers. This is to ensure that their tyres are legal and are capable of matching both the performance and handling potential of the car.

[18 Jan 07] Under PressureCategory: General Pressure washers can damage tyre sidewalls in only 5 seconds says TyreSafe
Hand car wash teams have mushroomed dramatically in the UK in the past few years. Estimates suggest that there are between 5,000 to 10,000 two or three man teams up and down the country offering this service to motorists. However, TyreSafe - formerly the Tyre Industry Council, the UK's leading tyre safety organisation - has issued a warning of a potential safety risk involving the equipment used by these groups that could lead to potential tyre failure.
There is growing evidence that pressure washers used by hand car wash providers can cause tyre damage unknown to most motorists and that they could be putting there own lives and that of their passengers and other road users at risk.
Heavy-duty pressure washer machines are capable of dispensing water at extremely high pressure and if aimed directly at the tyre, the jet can cause sidewall damage and degradation particularly if the water is heated or if the pressurised water is applied for an extended period.
According to a recent survey by TyreSafe, it was revealed that over 80% of drivers were unaware of the impact that pressure washing can have on their tyres and the danger posed.
In fact, German safety group DEKRA has discovered that if a washer nozzle is held close to a tyre at very high pressure, serious damage can occur in just five seconds! Even tyres that appear normal after being subjected to a pressure washer may have microscopic perforations, which can weaken the sidewall and cause a possible blow-out.
Other contributory factors to sidewall damage are the width of the water jet and the strength of any soaps or detergents used. Strong soap can remove protective chemicals that are embedded in the sidewall - usually resulting in the visual indication of brown watermarks - which can result in a significant reduction in durability.
For worry-free washing, TyreSafe has the following tips for motorists:
- Ideally, a light-to-medium duty pressure washer should be used (110 bar or less)
- The washer jet nozzle should be kept at least 20 cm from the tyre surface
- Always use a fan nozzle to clean tyres, rather than a circular nozzle
- Prevent prolonged exposure to a specific area of the tyre
- Avoid aiming the water jet directly at the join between the tyre and the wheel rim

[16 Dec 05] PART WORN TYRES STILL A PROBLEMCategory: General Almost 40% of tyres checked did not meet legislation
The sale of part-worn tyres - used tyres removed from cars on the continent and sent in containers to the UK - are still a cause for concern says the Tyre Industry Council - the UK foremost tyre safety organisation.
These concerns are backed-up by the environmental protection services at Glasgow City Council who found in checks at tyre dealerships, that a high percentage of the secondhand tyres checked did not meet the legal requirements and therefore could have posed a risk to an un-suspecting motorist.

[11 Oct 05] Tread Depth FindingsCategory: General THE importance of adequate tread depth on vehicle tyres has been independently supported in tests at the Motor Industry Research Association which the Tyre Industry Council has welcomed.
Independent braking tests conducted by the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) into stopping distances and cornering performance of car tyres on wet road surfaces show conclusively that these deteriorate noticeably well before the end of a tyre's life. As an example, braking tests show that significant increases in stopping distance begin to appear when tread depth falls below 3.5mm. Compared with the reference tyres used in the MIRA test, which had 6.7mm of tread, stopping distances were approximately 16% higher on similar tyres with 3mm of remaining tread and over 60% higher on those with only 1mm.
UK legislation requires a minimum of 1.6mm of remaining tread. This research shows just how important it is that motorists check the tread depth on their tyres regularly as well as pay attention to other safety critical features of their tyres such as pressures and wheel alignment.
The Tyre Industry Council (TIC) welcomes this research and the information it contains, as an important contribution to road safety.
Tyre tread depth is critical, especially in the wet, and the Tyre Industry Council is pleased that RoadSafe has decided to share the results of these braking tests with the public. |
[16 Sep 05] How many reasons do you need, to check the condition of your tyres?Category: General Everyone knows that tyres need to be up to standard in order to pass the annual M.O.T, but how many people check their condition in between times, or realise the many consequences of having worn tyres? Local Tyre Dealer, Just Tyres gives our readers 5 good reasons to check tyres more regularly.
Safety - This is probably stating the obvious, but to quote Leicestershire Constabulary's road safety officer, PC John Budulis "many people put not only their own lives at risk, but many other people's by driving about on defective tyres." (www.tyresafety.co.uk). Data provided by manufacturer, Continental Tyres, following independent research conducted at the Motor Industry Research Association, proves that the stopping distance of a car travelling at 50mph on tyres with just 1.6mm tread increases by 8.8 metres compared to new tyres with 6.7mm of tread. The manufacturer points out that "this is equivalent to more than 2 car lengths and could make the critical difference between knocking over and potentially killing a pedestrian or knocking a child off their bike and stopping in time".
Money - No-one enjoys spending money on tyres, and they are generally regarded as a distress purchase, but the financial consequences of not buying them is much more - the fine for having faulty tyres is currently a maximum of £2,500 per tyre. How many tyres can you buy for that? The term faulty can relate to tread depth - i.e below 1.6mm, mixing radial and cross ply tyres, incorrect pressure, cuts and bulges and using tyres unsuitable for the vehicle. Frightening isn't it!
Prosecution - Linked to the above is the threat of prosecution - as well as a fine, you will automatically be given 3 penalty points, whilst a court has the power to disqualify an offender from driving. And if that isn't bad enough, if you have an accident, you are not actually insured either. It's worth checking them now isn't it, and if they do need replacing, you will find no better place to buy them than Just Tyres who offer a large range at very competitive prices.
Handling - The crucial thing to check here is the pressure of your tyres as both high and low tyre pressure can cause reduced stability in braking and cornering. To quote the Tyre Industry Council "correct tyre pressures are vital for safe handling and optimum braking, grip and tyre life". To get the most accurate reading, check the pressure when the tyres are cold and also check for leakage at the valves.
Hassle - Imagine the hassle of having a blow-out or getting a flat tyre when you are in a hurry to get somewhere! We've all felt sorry for those poor souls trying to change a wheel on the hard shoulder with the traffic thundering past - it could be you if you don't check the pressure and general condition of your tyres.
Of course you don't need to do all this yourself - you can pop down to Just Tyres and they will check your tyres completely free of charge and put your mind at rest. In the event of a problem, they will aim to deal with it immediately and have your car ready within 30 minutes. Just Tyres specialises in the sale of tyres, holding greater stock levels than most tyre retailers, so if you need new tyres, you should find immediate availability of your choice. At the same time, it is comforting to know that Just Tyres won't pressure you to buy shock absorbers or brakes, because they don't sell them! |

[20 Jul 05] CHECK YOUR TYRE PRESSURESCategory: General BRITISH motorists are collectively wasting more than £1billion every year, and increasing the risk of an accident, by failing to keep an eye on their tyre pressure.
According to analysis by Avon Tyres, up to 90 percent of vehicles on Britain's roads do not have the correct pressure in their tyres leading to reduced fuel consumption and accelerating tyre wear. Alarmingly, it also increases the likelihood of a serious road traffic accident. Failure to regularly check their tyres means drivers unknowingly spend an extra £790m on fuel and £230m on new tyres every year.

[19 Jul 05] TIC WARNS AGAINST RETRO FITTING SELF SUPPORTING RUN-FLAT (SST) TYRESCategory: General The fitment of SST run-flat tyres to cars not originally designed to accept these advanced types of tyre, and not equipped with a pressure monitoring system, is not recommended by the tyre industry's foremost safety body, the Tyre Industry Council. A car's suspension is specifically tuned for SST run-flat tyres for maximum safety, performance, handling and ride quality. SST Run-flat tyres must only be fitted in conjunction with a tyre pressure monitoring system to ensure that a tyre deflation is communicated to the driver at the earliest possible moment. Failure to do so could result in a tyre being run in a deflated condition for longer than the recommended period and the driver left in ignorance of a tyre's condition.
Retrofitting of SST run-flat tyres may also compromise the ride characteristics of the vehicle to which they have been fitted because few older vehicles have been designed with run-flat fitment in mind. An example pointed out to the TIC recently involved the fitment of a set of run-flat tyres to a ten year old vehicle not fitted with a tyre pressure monitoring system. The car suffered a puncture and the driver was unaware of the deflated tyre, which was run in this state for some time, and the car failed its MOT because of damage to the tyre. All major tyre manufacturers producing SST run-flat tyres, along with all major tyre retailers, recommend against fitting run-flat tyres to vehicles not originally designed with this type of tyre in mind. Self supporting run-flat tyres must never be mixed with standard tyres on any vehicle.

[7 Jun 05] GET READY FOR SUMMER MOTORING!Category: General Summer Holiday Motoring Tips
With the summer holiday season fast approaching, and with more and more of us choosing UK destinations for our summer holidays, Just Tyres has devised some top safety tips for our readers to follow to ensure that their tyres do not let them down on their holiday journey.
Check Tyre pressures - contrary to popular myth, it is air, not the rubber or casing material that carries all the weight of a car so it is important to check the pressure regularly to keep your tyres fit and safe, but especially if the car is loaded down with lots of holiday luggage when they need more pressure than usual. To get the most accurate reading, check the pressure when the tyres are cold & also check for leakage at the valves - remember, correct pressure will also improve handling, reduce fuel consumption and tyre wear.
Check the tread depth of your tyres - the minimum legal UK tread depth for both car and caravan tyres is 1.6mm, and an illegal tyre could cost you a £2,500 fine and three penalty pointa - and do not forget, this also applies to the spare!
Check your tyres for damage - look out for any cuts, cracks or bulges, as these can lead to slow punctures and blow-outs. If you are towing a caravan or trailer, not only check pressure and tread depth, but look out for sidewall cracking or distortion caused by standing in one position for a long time. Any tyre more than six years old should be replaced.
Check your tyres for uneven wear - this may be caused by incorrect alignment or balance of wheels. If the front wheels show excessive or uneven wear, have the steering wheel alignment corrected, and if there is vibration or wheel wobble, get the front wheels and tyres rebalanced. Also examine the brakes if the tyres show signs of wear through wheel locking.
Driving style - this can make a huge difference to the life of your tyres. Avoid harsh braking, fierce acceleration and fast cornering, and do not turn the steering wheel of cars with power-steering whilst stationary. Do not drive over kerb edgings or other raised obstructions, and check tyres for foreign objects if you have driven over rough or uneven ground, or over ground littered with debris. Also remember that speeding causes excessive heat build-up which can reduce the life of tyres if they are not in good condition or are not inflated correctly.
Make sure that your vehicle is not overloaded - It is illegal to overload cars, light vans and lightweight trailers, and it is also likely to put excessive strain on the tyres which may result in greater deflation and overheating than normal, leading to more rapid wear.
As a company, Just Tyres are very concerned about tyre safety, and offer people the opportunity to have their tyres checked completely free of charge for peace of mind. In the event of a problem, they will aim to deal with it immediately and have your car ready within thirty minutes. Just Tyres specialises in the sales of tyres, holding greater stock levels than most tyre retailers, so if you need new tyres, you should find immediate availability of your choice. At the same time, it is comforting to know that Just Tyres would not pressure you to buy shock absorbers or brakes, because they do not sell them!

[18 Feb 05] LATEST RESEARCH CONFIRMS CONCERNS OVER WORN TYRESCategory: General A series of independent tests carried out at the Motor Industry Research Association provides new evidence that with tyres currently in use on British roads the risks of having an accident in the wet rise significantly the lower the tread depth. The tests were commissioned by the British Rubber Manufacturers' Association (BRMA), representing the major tyre manufacturers supplying tyres into the UK market. They were undertaken on a passenger car tyre typical of those currently in use and involved measuring the stopping distance and cornering performance of five sets of tyres, on two different wet test surfaces. The results of the braking tests showed that significant increases in stopping distances in the wet began to appear below 3.5mm. Compared with the reference tyre with tread at 6.7mm, stopping distance increased by 30% with 3mm of remaining tread and by over 50% with only 1mm. UK legislation requires a minimum of 1.6mm of tread depth.
The findings reinforce the TIC's call to motorists to check the tread depth and pressures on their tyres frequently, at least once per month, and to consider replacing tyres well before they reach the minimum legal tread depth. The TIC works closely with UK police forces supporting roadside tyre checks, latest figures confirm that 11% of cars and vans on UK roads have at least one defective tyre, a further 11% of vehicles checked had at least one tyre below 2mm. The Tyre Industry Council is a not-for-profit, non-commercial body, funded by tyre manufacturers and the majority of UK tyre retailers via its Associates programme. The main, and most successful, activity of the TIC is the roadside tyre check programme, run with the support and assistance of police forces throughout the UK. These checks have been highly effective in reducing the number of illegal and defective tyres on the UK's roads. Overall, the percentage of dangerous tyres on UK roads has fallen dramatically, from 17% six years ago, to 11% today.

[20 Aug 04] Michelin Ask for F1 ChangesCategory: General Following an announcement that the Formula One Technical Working Group has been asked to propose measures to reduce the performance of F1 cars, Michelin has offered a number of proposals.
Michelin feels that its proposals are very much in line with the FIA's main objectives for the future, which are to control performances by reducing cornering speeds for safety reasons, to offer a substantial reduction in costs through the virtual elimination of tyre testing and to improve the racing spectacle without introducing artificial rules.
After consultation with its partner teams, Michelin produced various proposals, which are listed below. The company feels that these.
The proposals, which Michelin feels could be introduced from as early as 2005 are the use of one set of tyres for qualifying and the entire race, between four sets and two sets of dry tyres to be available for each driver per weekend, available in one or two types, the supply of same specification prime and same specification option tyres for all teams and six sets per team for each test day (with a recommendation for a drastic reduction in testing during the F1 season, to be decided by either the Team Principals or the FIA).
Michelin Group Chairman and CEO, Edouard Michelin said, "Our proposals offer a triple benefit: an increase in safety, a reduction in costs and an improvement to the racing spectacle - particularly by having more overtaking. These proposals therefore both respond positively to the wishes of the FIA and also allow teams the freedom to choose their tyre supplier; a freedom that is at the very heart of the companies involved in Formula One.

[18 Jan 04] Latest Tyre SurveyCategory: General LATEST RESEARCH CONFIRMS CONCERNS OVER WORN TYRES
Research findings reinforce Just Tyres' call to motorists to check tyre tread and pressures on their cars frequently as new evidence shows conclusively the risks of having an accident in the wet rises significantly the lower a tyre depth becomes.
Independent braking tests* conducted by the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) show that car tyre stopping distance and cornering performance deteriorate noticeably toward the end of a tyre's life. The tests were undertaken on a passenger car tyre typical of those currently in use on British roads and involved measuring the stopping distance and cornering performance of five sets of tyres, on two different wet surfaces. The results of the braking tests showed that significant increases in stopping distances in the wet began to appear below 3.5mm compared with the reference tyres used in the MIRA test which had 6.7mm of tread. Stopping distances were 30% greater on similar tyres with a 3mm of remaining tread and over 50% higher with only 1mm. UK legislation requires a minimum 1.6mm remaining tread.
Never has there been so much emphasis on road safety - most modern family saloons now have safety features such as air bags, high visibility lights and anti-lock brakes as standard. And, ironically, the more confidence motorists have in the ability of their vehicles to withstand an impact, the faster they tend to drive. Yet the condition of tyres, which are the only part of a vehicle which have contact with the road, are probably the most neglected part of a vehicle. As an associate member of the Tyre Industry Council (TIC) which works closely with the UK police forces supporting roadside tyre checks, Just Tyres can confirm that latest figures show that 11% of cars and vans on the UK roads have at least one defective tyre, with a further 11% of vehicles checked having at least one tyre below 2mm.
Ian Grant, Just Tyres' Managing Director, said, "Tyres are such an important and integral part of road safety but many motorists are complacent when it comes to tyre safety. We have always known defective tyres are a contributory factor in so many road accidents, particularly in wet conditions, but now this research provides hard evidence. We want to do all we can to educate the motorist of the importance of tyre safety - it only takes a few simple checks and regular checking of tyre depths to help prevent accidents."
Motorists will be repaid with greater safety, longer life and ultimately savings in costs if tyres are maintained properly. It is an inexpensive task that only takes a few minutes. Just Tyres advise motorists to undertake the following checks at least once per month.
1. Check the correct pressures against the manufacturer's recommendations as given in the vehicle handbook.
2. Adjust pressure as necessary.
3. Check tyre tread depths. Consider replacing tyres well before they reach the current legal minimum of 1.6mm as stopping distances in the wet are 30% greater with 3mm of tread.
4. Clean dirt from valves and fit caps all round.
5. Remove stones and other foreign objects from treads.
6. Have the steering alignment corrected if front tyres show signs of excessive or uneven wear.
7. Examine brakes if tyres show signs of wear through wheel locking.
8. Have front wheels and tyres re-balanced if there are signs of vibration, wheel wobble or patchy tyre wear.
And don't forget the spare!
